Storage room in basement

• Goal: establish the storage area to organize all staffs in basement!

• Design: storage shelf in the corner below while allowing access to water valves and sum pump and future insulation/drywall. shelf should be easily made and endurable.

• budget: < 50

• Solution: 2 by 4 and floors from lowes.

The first thing is to measure the area as shown blow. 3'' space is left for insulation and drywall.

Next, the layout of the shelf: 3 layers vertically, 6 vertical post. the first and second layout from the bottom are not cross 6 posts. this leaves space for accessing valves. the top layer runs across 6 posts.

thirdly, calculate the material list:

total 2 by 4. 8*39''+4*99'' = 708'' = 59'. 

subfloor: Two 43'' by 39";

              One 8'6" by 43"

(triangle shelf on the right side is ignored at this stage)

Material list: Five (or more) 2'x4'x12 lumber. cut into the size below:

Eight 2"x4"x39"

Four 2"x4"x99"

1. corniced board Width = windowwidth + 3 in; // 1.5 in for each side (including board thickness). 1" longitudinal from frame to Cornice inside; 8" top frame to lower side of cornice; 16" Cornice Board top to button
2. use T square to ensure nice straight cut
3. use either jit saw and handheld saw to cut the wood.
4. corniced board usually is 3/3.5 in from the wall.
5. other material: one top board/ tow side board.
6. assembly: corner bracket / and L bracket

Tool: drill, drii bit; #8 3/4 inch screw; laser measurement; anchor;
1. determine location of L bracket. if there is stud behind it. use screw directly; otherwise, use drywall anchor;
2.



shopping list:

- board: width 76'' (front) + 4.5*2 (left/right) = 84". thickness, 1''. depth >16.5 (front) +4.5(side) '' = 21''. so 84" by 21"" by 1" board.
- cutting: one 76 by 16.5 by 1" ; one 74" by 3.5" by 1"; two 16.5 by 3.5 by 1".
- Two corner brace,
- Four 1" L brackets.
- Twenty-six 3/4" wood screw
- For installation on wall: three 2" or 3" L brackets;

下面讲讲怎么customize wood shelves
我家餐桌是ebony stained oak,所以餐桌附近的架子我也想用ebony stained oak。
经常看到有人说oak looks old or old fashioned,其实不尽然。oak纹路比较明显，所以如果是要stain成黑色，oak是最能显出木头本身的纹路的。这个我是看ligne roset的这款餐桌领悟到的 － 他家的原木色的桌子就是cherry或者walnut的，而黑色的finish,用的就是oak.
oak分red oak and white oak. white oak,也就是我家地板的木头，相对比较贵。red oak相对便宜。两个的纹路有小区别，但是硬度差别不很大。做架子，在强度差别不大的情况下，用red oak就比较合适了。我想找1.5英寸厚的oak,很难找，但是终于在亚利桑那的一家木材厂找到了。

等木头到了，我们把木头带到附近的lumber shop锯成需要的尺寸。

下一步就是stain了。木头的颜色，可以上漆，可以stain. stain的好处是可以保留原有的纹路。理论上就是让颜色渗入木头表层，再seal.
基本步骤就是sand ->condition -> stain (2x) -> poly finish
基本东西大家youtube就可以找到细节，这里提醒几个事项：
1。打磨建议买个sanderBosch ROS20VSK 120-Volt Variable Speed Random Orbit Sander Kit 
2.第一次sand要用粗砂纸，比如120grit

第二次用细的

要注意带手套，带眼罩,口罩。
3。如果想用oil based stain,那么conditioner一定要用oil based.反之亦然。
4。oil based/water based stain都可以用water based poly
5.家里打磨地板不能用普通minwax产品，因为地板要更耐磨。
最后，大家可以到minwax网站多看看，里面的细节，video很有帮助。这里只是从实用的角度列一下需要注意的地方。

Additionally, it is important to have a nice brush for staining. Some video of youtube uses a cloth for stain. My experience is that it may not be uniform enough to show the beauty of wood train.
